ABOUT US

The Smith Mountain Lake Center began as a dream shared by our community — a dream of creating a welcoming, multi-use space where people of all ages could connect, learn and be inspired, right here in the heart of Smith Mountain Lake. Over the years, that dream gained momentum thanks to the passion and persistence of local leaders who understood just how much a space like this could mean to our region.

Vicki Gardner, former executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, helped lead the charge. Her belief in the power of community helped bring new energy to the effort, ultimately resulting in the formation of The Smith Mountain Lake Center, Inc. — now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Today, the SML Center project is guided by an 11-member board of directors committed to finally realizing this vision by purchasing and transforming the Westlake Cinema building into a vibrant venue where education, entertainment (including continued film showings), events and community connection will be accessible to the entire region.

A HUB FOR LEARNING & GROWTH

The Smith Mountain Lake Center will be a place to explore ideas, gain skills and fuel personal and professional growth. From K–12 support and workforce development to college courses and career training, the Center will open doors to lifelong learning right here at the lake. Whether you're continuing your education or discovering something entirely new, this will be a space where curiosity thrives.

A PLACE FOR ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

From center stage to silver screen, The Smith Mountain Lake Center will be a vibrant venue for creativity and connection. Local performers, musicians, artists and filmmakers will have a place to shine, while audiences enjoy concerts, plays, art exhibits and film screenings. It’s your place to be entertained and inspired.

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Looking for a space to meet, create or collaborate? The Smith Mountain Lake Center will offer flexible meeting rooms and event areas designed for both productivity and connection. Ideal for entrepreneurs, professionals and community groups alike, the Center will support local business development — and provide a welcoming home for celebrations, club meetings and social gatherings.

COMMUNITY IMPACT & LONG-TERM BENEFITS

The Smith Mountain Lake Center is designed to serve the people of the SML community and our surrounding region all year long, with indoor programs and activities that bring people together, rain or shine. Whether it’s hosting lifelong learning classes, community events or spaces for local organizations to meet and collaborate, the Center will be a hub for connection, creativity and growth.

By welcoming educators, artists, performers, civic leaders and entrepreneurs, the Center will foster a culture of sharing talents and building something meaningful — together. It’s more than a venue; it’s a long-term investment in the cultural, educational and economic vitality of the region.
